What I've learned at RWA 2010

Two thousand writers. The happiest place on Earth. Books out the ying-yang.

Being a "virgin" to the Romance Writers of America conference, this week has been a bit of a learning experience for me. A fantastic, intense, oh-my-god-why-did-I-wear these-heels learning experience. So I wanted to share what I've gleaned from the conference as we approach our last day.

10. Nora Roberts tends to curse during keynote speeches. AND IT IS AWESOME.

9. I'm so freaking glad I'm a Pocket/Gallery author. Not only does the company take care of us, but the authors/editors are like that group of cool girls you were a little bit afraid of in high school - but you still wanted to hang out with them because they were obviously having a good time.

8. They give us free books! That's just enabling a bunch of people who obviously have a problem.

7. No one wants to go to Disney jail. (Don't ask.)

6. Never be afraid to introduce yourself to a complete stranger. That's how you get lunch buddies.

5. Never drink anything called a pickled watermelon. It is a cruel joke on the tastebuds. The name alone should inspire fear in your gag reflex.

4. Steampunk people are way cooler.

3. Within every writer is a fan of someone else's work. No matter who they are or what they've written, they will stand in line to get their book signed just like anyone else.

2. Workshops focused on writing love scenes are not for the timid.

1. RWA members are some of the nicest people on Earth. No one else will understand the paranoia, the self-doubt and the incredible highs of writing. The national conference is like being called home to the mothership.

And DID I MENTION FREE BOOKS?

Release Day Contest!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY, everybody!

To commemorate the release of AND ONE LAST THING - the story of a woman done wrong who gets revenge in a very public, very verbal manner - I've decided to offer a free signed copy to the reader who can offer the most heinous "lover did me wrong" story. He cheated with your twin and tried to tell you it didn't count because you're identical. She ruined your credit by spending $11,000 on QVC jewelry. He had one last fling with a second cousin at your rehearsal dinner. Let's hear it!

There will be bonus points awarded if you got revenge in a legal, non-lethal manner. (Please don't make me a witness for the prosecution.) Also, please spread the word about this contest and release of AND ONE LAST THING on Facebook, Myspace, Goodreads, Twitter and blogs. Post the link along with your story in the comment section.

You have until Aug. 3 to post your story. I will determine the winner and announce it here.

For the record, this blog and the author do not condone crimes against property or people. If you're going to exact revenge against someone, use your words.

RWA Conference 2010

Hey All,

I will be attending the RWA conference for the first time this year. And I will appear at the "Readers for Life" Literacy Autographing. The a two-hour event, which includes 500 authors, raises thousands of dollars for ProLiteracy Worldwide.

This year, the mass signing takes place on Wednesday, July 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Walt Disney World® Dolphin Resort, Pacific Exhibit Hall, in Orlando, Florida. This event is open to the public; there is no admittance charge.

For a list of participating authors, see the RWA site.

Lacey's Playlist

Hey All,

I get asked frequently about the type of music I listen to while I write. For AND ONE LAST THING, it was all about the music. The following was the playlist I used while writing Lacey's story. If you listen to the music while you read the book, you'll be able to see which song goes with which section of the book.

Lacey's Playlist

So What? - Pink

Trouble - Pink

Funhouse - Pink

Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

F--- You - Lily Allen

Soul Sister - Train

All I Ever Wanted - Kelly Clarkson

Landslide - Dixie Chicks

Who Knows - Natasha Beddingfield

Please Don't Leave Me - Pink

Let My Love Open the Door - Pete Townsend

AND:

And I'm thinking about running a contest on release day. What would you think of sharing your most heinous break-up/man-did-me-wrong stories? Bonus points if you got revenge in a fabulous (but legal, non-lethal) way. The most heinous (chosen by me) could win a free copy of AND ONE LAST THING...

Would you be willing to participate?

Great review from Booklist!

The countdown for AND ONE LAST THING is TWO MORE WEEKS!

The latest issue of the American Library Association's Review Magazine, Booklist, includes the following review for the book:

“Harper brings her trademark humor and biting social comedy to this hilarious tale of heartbreak and romance, a novel that should be on the summer reading list of every woman who has ever been wronged.”

I love the idea of women rushing over to their newly dumped friends' houses armed with ice cream and copies of AND ONE LAST THING!
